Wrestling Art w/ Chris Things Ep. 119 - 'The Joy of Lucha' Post-Show Special Solo Edition

Evaluation and Summary

5.9/10

Episode 119 is a solo post-show special where host Chris Things reflects on 'The Joy of Lucha Libre,' a recent wrestling art exhibition he organized. Rather than interview format, this is a stream-of-consciousness debrief where Chris discusses the emotional and logistical journey of creating the show. He covers his pre-event worries and challenges, the creative process behind his own artwork contributions, the experience of coordinating a group exhibition, and the unique concept of staging a 'gallery-wrestling-match' as part of the event. Chris also briefly touches on his participation in the Brisbane Illustration Fair that occurred the same weekend. The episode serves as both a behind-the-scenes look at exhibition curation and a personal reflection on achieving a 'bucket list item' in his art career. He thanks the international artists, wrestlers (Cockroach and El Tigre/Velkan Wild), Lucha Fantastica, the Superwow Gallery, and attendees who supported the event. The tone is conversational and introspective rather than polished, with Chris explicitly framing it as cathartic personal processing ('felt kind of nice to talk about it all just for my own sanity's sake'). The episode appears aimed at fans of the Social Suplex community, wrestling art enthusiasts, and those interested in the intersection of visual art and professional wrestling culture.

Verdict: A niche episode with genuine insider access to art-wrestling curation that delivers on its promise, but limited by its rambling format and lack of structured analysis or broad appeal.

Sports rubric

  • Analysis depth 2/5 24%

Show notes indicate stream-of-consciousness rambling rather than structured analysis; no evidence of deep breakdowns or teaching moments, just personal reflection on feelings and logistics.

  • Insider knowledge 4/5 24%

Chris is the artist and curator directly involved in the exhibition, providing firsthand account of challenges, creative decisions, and behind-the-scenes coordination that fans wouldn't otherwise access.

  • Entertainment n/a

No information about tone, banter quality, or energy level provided in show notes; cannot assess entertainment value from description alone.

  • Substance 3/5 18%

Episode covers multiple topics (exhibition creation, personal feelings, Brisbane Fair, artist/wrestler collaborations) but described as 'ramble chat' and personal processing rather than dense information delivery.

  • Delivers on its title 5/5 18%

Title promises a post-show special debrief about 'The Joy of Lucha' exhibition, and description confirms that's exactly what the episode delivers—reflection on the show's creation and execution.

  • Value for time 3/5 18%

33 minutes for a solo ramble with acknowledged tangents (Brisbane Fair) and personal processing; reasonable length for the format but likely contains padding typical of unstructured reflection.

Show notes

Episode 119 is here pals! Now that'The Joy of Lucha Libre with Chris Things' is done & dusted, I thought I'd do a special little post-show debrief solo-edition of the show to yammer on about it for a bit. In my stream-of-consciousness one-sided ramble chat I pull the curtain back a little bit to talk about my feelings leading up to & coming out of the big exhibition. I'm talking my worries, my challenges, the unforeseen bits & pieces, the journey in creating my own latest collection of work for the show, the group-show element, putting together a 'gallery-wrestling-match' & just all of the things. I also chat a super fun & rewarding Brisbane Illustration Fair from this past weekend. Hope some folks find this stuff interesting. Either way, felt kind of nice to talk about it all just for my own sanity's sake. Thank you again so very much to all of the talented artists from all around the world who were a part of this, to our wrestlers; Cockroach of Wacols Most Wanted & 'El Tigre' AKA Velkan Wild, to Lucha Fantastica, to Aaron Craig & Superwow Gallery & to our sponsors. And of course to everyone who came along & who supported my through this big-time bucket list item of my art life. Enjoy!!
